We Are Dancing at XXX is an amateur dance theater. In this work, three amateurs, Jiankui Liu, Jing Li, and RANDRIANOMEARISOA Rado Tsiadiana Nataniela, present their dance and unique life stories and combine them in the performance.

Jiankui Liu started learning Latin dance when he was 39 years old. He was born in the year the People’s Republic of China was founded. In his performance, he recounts his personal life during the Mao era. At the age of 19, he responded to the CCP’s call, “Go to the frontier, to the place where the motherland needs it most,” and went to the Sino-Soviet border, where he became a border guard on a military farm for 11 years.

In those days, people’s bodies didn’t belong to them, they couldn’t know when would they separate from their families and when to reunite. They also couldn’t pursue their loved ones and couldn’t choose the life they wanted to lead due to social and political reasons.

In the 80s, Jiankui, now in his 40s, was introduced to Latin dance. For the first time, he discovered that his body, which may be a little old, is just as beautiful and unique as any other person’s body. Consequently, he now decides to perform, so that he can show his dance and story about his life to the audience.

Jing Li is a Chinese girl born in the 90s. She has been exposed to dance since she was a child, including Chinese Classical Dance, Chinese Ethnic Dance, etc. As she gradually grew up, she realized that this kind of dance couldn’t let her feel her body, and couldn’t cope with the mental and emotional crisis she faced when she entered society, so she started to learn other dances, jazz, hip-hop, and now modern dance, as an attempt to combat her anxiety and depression.

Just a week before the performance, Jing broke a leg bone in a fall during rehearsal and became wheelchair-bound. That raised a new question for us: What is dance? How do we dance? Why is it still important to us and to the audience?

During his performance, Nataniela talked about the skin disease he suffered as a child. What does skin mean to him? And how does it define his relationship with the world? He constantly explores that in his performance.
